MX620 060-DI-59 is seen at Sfax station with train 5/72, the mid-day
express over the narrow gauge lines to Tunis. This train was normally always powered by a
Bombardier DP class Locomotive, now worked by new GM GT18's. The line does not give any impression at all of being
narrow gauge most of the track is of a very high standard. Picture taken on December 9th

Selja with train 988, a loaded phosphate train ready to descend the hill through the
spectacular Copper Canyon, en route to Metlaoui. One of twenty two Locos in service,
sixteen are used on the narrow gauge lines, the others work the standard gauge route from

MLW DL536B loco 040-DK-90 waits at Tunis-Ville station with southbound
commuter train for Borj Cedria. These strange looking ALCO powered Locos provide a twenty
minute interval push pull stopping service on this line. Fitted with a special lightweight
bogie. Used mainly on the narrow gauge lines, though a couple can be found also on the

MLW DL536B loco 040-DK-92 is seen
at Kalaa Khasba with train 6/51, the morning train from Tunis, a distance
of 235 kilometres. The class do not generally work these trains any
longer. Photo taken 6th December 1995 before loco ran round to work the

Bombardier built MX624S Loco 060-DP-136 is seen at Bir-Bou-Rekba with train
5-12/53 the morning express from Tunis-Ville - Gábes. Gábes is currently the most
southern station in Tunisia, and is on the edge of the Sahara desert. This batch of Locos
was the last Diesels built from the long line of Locos under the ALCO/MLW/Bombardier name.

Bombardier built MX624S Loco
060-DP-145 is seen at Tunis-Ville main station on 4th December 1995 with
train 5/61, the 07:10 departure to Gábes. The loco would normally work
the train throughout, a distance of 422 kilometres. Nowadays new GT18 GM's
can be found on this train. |

Bombardier
MX624S 060-DP-150 is seen arriving at Sidi Mhimech with train 16 from Ghardimaou -
Tunis-Ville. This Diesel was the third last ALCO/MLW Bombardier Loco built in the
Bombardier factory in Montréal. Most see use on the narrow gauge lines, but the final
five Locos were built for the standard gauge lines from Tunis. Picture taken on December

General Motors G26 060-DH-222 is seen at Tunis with the northbound overnight train arrival
from Metlaoui and Gábes. Very rarely seen on passenger duties, this small class
Diesels are normally seen on freight duties. The DH replaced a defective DP Loco at
Sousse. Seen at Tunis on 27th November 1998. |

1800hp is seen inside the main
"Sidi Fath Allah" workshops of the SNCFT. In a fairly poor condition with a
number of parts missing. A couple remain in use, mainly on empty stock movements

GE UM10B 040-DM255 is seen arriving at
Selja with the "Red Lizard" tourist train from Metlaoui via the
"Copper Canyon". DM-255 is specially adapted to work this
service, having an auxiliary electric supply

GE UM10B 040-DM256 is seen at Metlaoui
with train 15/63, the daily afternoon train to Redeyef. The train takes
the spectacular route through the "Copper Canyon" before
terminating 44 kilometres later at the "one horse" town of

GE U22C 060-DN-304 of 2500hp is seen
Metlaoui with a loaded westbound phosphate train, bound for Gábes via the
freight only link running across the southern half of the SNCFT network.

GE U22C 060-DN-315 of 2500hp is seen as a reserve engine at
Beja, half way along the standard gauge line from Tunis-Ville - Ghardimaou. Of the twenty
U22Cs that were built for Tunisia in 1981, five are used on the standard gauge lines

GE U22C 060-DN-318 of 2500hp is seen
at Tunis-Ville on 8th December 1995 on train TM1, the morning
international train to Annaba (Algeria). The train was formed of French
designed "Corail" stock. Normally only the class DI MLW's was used
on this train as they have the electric train heating supply for the air
conditioning, but not on this occasion. This international service no
longer runs. |

Ganz-Mávag built 040-DO-331 of
1800hp is seen at Monastir with train 22-5/68 on 3rd December 1995. The DO
Ganz's were often used on the trains on this line, but due to poor availability
were sometimes substituted by DI or DP classes. Nowadays new GT18 GM's
work these trains. |

Small Bo-Bo GM built Loco at Tunis-Ville station with train 6/73 service
to Dahmani on 6th February 1997. This class initially was fitted with a centre coupler
which restricted their workings to freight. In more recent time they had to
be coupled to
an adapter vehicle to couple to standard wagons. The class are now being fitted with
standard buffers. |
